CORAL

Coral is the calcareous skeleton of a coelenterate octocoral that belongs to the gorgonaceae family.

Varieties and color
Of the many species in the family, the jewelry world is especially interested in those of the Corallium genus that produce gemological qualities.
One can distinguish between Corallium rubrum, called noble coral, common in the Mediterranean, with a very deep red color bull s blood, red, orange-red, pink, light pink or white.
Of all the commercial qualities, the most expensive and valued is the one with a pale pink tone, which is sold as angel skin. The cheapest is white, which is usually dyed, passing it off as better qualities.

Other red, purple, orange, pink or white corals from the Pacific Ocean are:

Coralium elatius, a more or less deep pink color sometimes with concentric layers of different colors and a whitish axis.

Corallium secundum from the Hawaiian Islands and the seas of Japan, with wavy lines of light and dark purple.

Corallium japonicumred to orange or pink with white areas.

Black coral.Produced by Antipathes spiralis.

Bamboo coral Orange, yellow-brown in color, produced by Koratoisis.
